Why Is Everyone Talking About the Nervous System?

Over the last few years, the nervous system has become one of the biggest conversations in the wellness world — and now, even in esthetics. But why?
Because science is continuing to confirm what many holistic practitioners have intuitively understood for years: the body keeps score. Chronic stress, overstimulation, lack of rest, emotional suppression, poor sleep, inflammation, and constant “go-go-go” living don’t just affect how we feel internally… they eventually begin showing up externally too.
They show up on the face.
Tension in the jaw. Tightness in the forehead. Puffiness. Breakouts. Increased sensitivity. Accelerated aging. Dull skin. Exhaustion in the eyes. The body and skin are deeply connected, and the nervous system is one of the bridges between them.

In today’s world, many of us are functioning in a constant state of fight-or-flight. Endless notifications, traffic, work stress, financial pressure, over stimulation, and hustle culture keep the body in survival mode far longer than it was ever designed to stay there. When cortisol and stress hormones remain elevated over time, the body begins diverting energy away from repair and regeneration.
That impacts everything — including the skin.
Stress can impair skin barrier function, increase inflammation, disrupt sleep cycles, slow healing, contribute to premature aging, and worsen skin conditions like acne, rosacea, eczema, and sensitivity. Even facial tension patterns become stored in the fascia and muscles over time, influencing expression lines, circulation, lymphatic flow, and overall skin vitality.
This understanding became a natural progression in my own journey.

Before becoming a Holistic Esthetician, I spent over 25 years as a makeup artist and over a decade practicing Reiki and energy work. Over the years, I realized people weren’t just looking for skincare or makeup. They were exhausted. Burnt out. Disconnected from themselves. Carrying stress in their bodies and on their faces.
That realization led me to create the rituals I now offer inside The Ritual Esthetics Room.
Sometimes my clients are coming directly from work, sitting in traffic, caring for children all day, rushing from obligation to obligation. Then they lay down on my table and are expected to immediately relax while I begin touching their face — something that is actually very intimate for the nervous system and body.
It only made sense to begin differently.
Every Signature Ritual Facial begins with a guided somatic meditation to help the body soften, arrive, and transition out of survival mode. It creates space to consciously put down what’s being carried mentally, emotionally, and physically. Clients are guided to set an intention to release what no longer serves them and reconnect with themselves before we even begin the hands-on facial work.
From there, the ritual flows intentionally: facial massage to release tension and encourage circulation and lymphatic movement, customized skin treatments, arm and hand massage, Reiki energy work, LED light therapy, and sound healing to support deeper restoration.
Each layer is designed with the nervous system in mind.
Facial massage itself has powerful physiological effects. Studies show massage can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” state associated with healing and repair. Gentle touch may help reduce cortisol levels, improve circulation, support lymphatic drainage, soften muscular tension, and increase feelings of safety and relaxation within the body.
Sound healing and Reiki are also increasingly being explored through a nervous system lens. While more research is still emerging, many people report reduced anxiety, improved sleep, emotional release, and deep relaxation after sessions involving calming frequencies, intentional touch, breathwork, and meditative states.
And honestly — in a world constantly pulling us out of ourselves — maybe this is exactly what we need more of.
Not more rushing. Not more overstimulation. Not more pressure to constantly produce.
But moments to pause.
Moments where the body finally feels safe enough to soften.
Because when the nervous system feels supported, the entire body responds differently — including the skin.
This work was never just about skincare for me.
It’s about creating space for people to reconnect with themselves in a world that keeps pulling them away.
