Is Your Skincare Routine Helping… or Hurting Your Skin Barrier?

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do for your skin is… less.

You’ve probably seen the endless skincare routines online—multiple cleansers, acids, serums, retinol, masks… the list goes on.
But what if healthier skin isn’t about doing more?
What if it’s about protecting what you already have?
Your skin barrier is your body’s first line of defense. Think of it as a protective shield that keeps moisture in while protecting your skin from irritants, bacteria, pollution, and environmental stress. When it’s healthy, your skin feels balanced, calm, hydrated, and resilient.
When it’s compromised, your skin lets you know.
Common signs include:
Tightness after cleansing
Redness or sensitivity
Burning or stinging when applying products
Dry, flaky patches
Unexpected breakouts
Skin that feels both oily and dehydrated
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to “fix” their skin by doing too much. Over-exfoliating, layering multiple active ingredients, or constantly switching products can weaken your skin barrier instead of strengthening it.
During the summer, your skin has even more to contend with. Sun exposure, sweat, chlorine, salt water, air conditioning, and frequent cleansing can all leave it feeling dry, irritated, and depleted.
At The Ritual Esthetics Room, I believe healthy skin starts with a healthy foundation. Before we focus on fine lines, pigmentation, acne, or signs of aging, we first make sure your skin is functioning the way it was designed to.

My Simple Summer Skincare Routine
☀️ Morning
Gentle cleanse (or simply rinse with water if your skin doesn’t feel oily)
Hydrating toner or facial mist
Antioxidant serum
Eye cream
Moisturizer
Broad-spectrum SPF
Lip balm with SPF
🌙 Evening
Double cleanse (if you’ve worn makeup or sunscreen)
Hydrating toner or facial mist
Treatment serum(s)
Eye cream
Facial oil (optional)
Moisturizer (or use a facial oil instead if your skin is on the oilier side or prefers fewer layers)
Nourishing lip balm
A helpful tip: Products are generally applied from thinnest to thickest. Toners and serums go on first, followed by facial oils, then moisturizer to help lock everything in.
Remember, consistency is far more important than having a shelf full of products. A simple routine you can stick with will always outperform an overly complicated one.
My Favorite Skincare Lines
Two of my favorite professional skincare lines are:
Eminence Organic Skin Care
and Earth Harbor
I love them because they focus on nourishing and supporting the skin barrier with thoughtfully selected ingredients instead of overwhelming the skin.
Of course, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to skincare. What works beautifully for one person may not be the best fit for another, which is why every recommendation I make is personalized to your skin’s unique needs, lifestyle, and goals.
One of my favorite parts of every facial is helping clients feel confident caring for their skin at home. After each treatment, you’ll receive a personalized follow-up email that includes a skin analysis, customized product recommendations, and a simple morning and evening routine tailored specifically to your skin. My goal is to take the guesswork out of skincare and help you build a routine that feels simple, sustainable, and effective.
Healthy skin isn’t created by doing everything.
It’s created by understanding what your skin truly needs.
Sometimes, less really is more.
